Description

Barry Kluger-Bell will lead a 2.5 day Assessment facilitation academy to prepare participants to effectively lead a 20+ hour professional development course for teachers in their local collaboratives.  The workshop will introduce the Formative Assessment Cycle, a process by which teachers gather evidence of students’ thinking and use this evidence to decide next steps for teaching.  The training is based on the “Assessing for Learning” workshop developed by the Exploratorium Institute for Inquiry in collaboration with teacher, researcher and author Wynne Harlen.

Sessions address the following topics:

Introduction to Formative Assessment—Participants reflect on how they currently view assessment and then examine a model that describes assessment as a cycle of events.

Assessing Process Skills—Participants learn how to observe and interpret students’ use of the process skills of science.

Effective Questioning—Participants explore how different kinds of questions can reveal students’ science ideas.

Assessing Science Ideas—Participants create indicators of development for specific scientific ideas and consider the nature of feedback that supports student learning.

Student Self-Assessment—Participants investigate the value of students assessing their own and peers’ work.
