UT-Brownsville Regional Collaborative / Brownsville
Mission
The mission of The University of Texas at Brownsville's Regional Collaborative is to provide state-of-the-art, on-going professional development opportunities for teachers within its region. The intent of the program is to support initiatives that increase the content and pedagogical practices of teacher leaders that effect positive change in student achievement.
Accomplishments
The UT-Brownsville Science Collaborative has enjoyed a rich history of mentoring and supporting science teachers in south Texas. It has established a strong connection with area school districts through its collaboration with area superintendents, principals, science educators, and teachers. Many of the area's science education leadership (e.g., science specialists, science consultants, instructional facilitators) were Science Teacher Mentors. The performance of school districts like Brownsville ISD, the largest south Texas district, have excellent ratings in science. Smaller rural school districts have also enjoyed similar success. Collaborative teachers have the opportunity to earn a Master of Education with a major in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Science Education. The program provides both elementary and secondary science options.
