To create a science and technology learning community for Houston area teachers, schools, and districts through program development and sustained teacher professional development in science content, pedagogy, systemic school reform, and technology. A new initiative of the Rice Collaborative for 2008-09 is the creation of a new training laboratory housed in Spring Branch ISD: the ConocoPhillips-Rice Elementary Model Science Lab. This training laboratory will serve the needs of elementary science teachers from districts throughout the Greater Houston area beginning in Fall 2008.
The Rice Collaborative has served hundreds of K12 science teachers and tens of thousands of students in the Houston area since 1994. The Rice/Aldine Science specialist program in Aldine ISD with its twenty plus full time science specialists received a special recognition partnership award in 2002 at the Governor's Conference on Mathematics, Science & Technology. The RICE/HISD Elementary Model Science trained more than 150 elementary teachers in science content and pedagogy with each teacher participant receiving one full day each week of science professional development throughout the academic year. The new ConocoPhillips-Rice Elementary Model Science Lab designed to serve elementary science teachers throughout the greater Houston area will train up to 80 elementary teachers in science content and pedagogy with each teacher participant receiving one full day each week of science professional development throughout the academic year beginning in 2008-09.
