Mission

The mission of the Lake Houston Regional Collaborative is to foster enthusiasm and knowledge of science while increasing student achievement.

Accomplishments

Lake Houston Science Collaborative works with seven local districts and three private schools to serve the area surrounding Lake Houston, northeast of Houston. Bridging II TAKS Optics Training was provided 10/20-10/22/05 to seventy-two K-5 teachers from the participating districts.

A monthly informal “drop-in” session –AWSOME (Always Welcome Saturday Open Mentoring Exchange) Day – has been established where teachers can visit with one another, plan lab activities, borrow materials, observe lectures, and checkout books from the extensive Lake Houston Collaborative / De La Cruz science library.

Through collaboration with the Humble ISD Education Foundation and the Texas A&M Geospatial Extension Service, the Lake Houston Science Collaborative is creating a data base of grades 3-8 lessons which integrate the use of GPS handheld units and digital cameras. Science Teacher Mentors experienced a full day of training in GPS application and wrote lessons which tie directly into the TEKS for science. In many cases, these lessons include interdisciplinary connections to other content areas. Plans are in place to further develop these lessons so that they may be shared nationwide.
