The Region 4 Science Collaborative provides opportunities for Grades 2 - 8 science teachers to share, model, and learn research-based best practices that lead to increased student Science TAKS achievement, the overall improvement of science content knowledge of the participating science teacher, and the support of Science TEKS objectives.
During the 2006 - 2007 school year, the Region 4 Science Collaborative trained 40 science teacher mentors (STMs), providing an average of 110 hours of professional development. STMs participating in Global Learning Obeservations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) trainings received GLOBE starter kits. Additionally, participating STMs and cadre members (CMs), who were required to attend an average of 12 hours, received Region 4 Education Service Center's Gateways to Science student and teacher edition textbooks.
During Febuary 2007, the Region 4 Science collaborative was awarded a grant, creating a partnership with BP and the Galveston Historical Foundation. During the months of June and July, the Region 4 Science Collaborative conducted GLOBE Hydrology protocol workshops in Galveston Bay onboard the Sea Gull II, a floating classroom. BP's generous donation allowed 80 science teachers to receive Hydrology based equipment and the opportunity to bring their students aboard the Sea Gull II during the 2007 - 2008 school year.
