The Science Collaborative has changed my life. The things that I have learned, I have been able to put into practice in my classroom in all areas.

Mission

Texas A&M International University at Laredo through the PEIC (Pre-K-16 Educational Improvement Consortium) has committed to advance the quality of science education in its 100 mile radius by:

  1. Offering an intensive, integrated science program;
  2. Enhancing the quality and quantity of K-12 science teachers through professional development opportunities; and by
  3. Facilitating teacher implementation of relevant science learning that hopefully will reduce achievement gaps in math and science performance of diverse student populations.

Accomplishments

Laredo's TRC science collaborative at TAMIU has experienced outstanding success in its first year of operation. During this period we have added to our collaborative 3 school districts that encompass a total of 12 middle schools and 50 elementary schools (62 STMS). All campuses participated in training of Bridging II TAKS, Modules 1 and 2. At the end of the school year these STMs turned around and trained their fellow summer school teachers and student partipants in the United I.S.D.'s Summer Academy. Zapata I.S.D. also trained other teachers during the early summer.

Teachers continue to remind us of how successful this endeavor was because of the top-notched material they received and how eagerly their students looked forward to the hands-on science labs designed to improve their scores. Our elementary teachers (often not comfortably versed in teaching science) raved about their new found knowledge and ability to bring a love of science into their classrooms.

This coming year we hope to be equally productive and once again exceed our goals. In addition to the Bridging II Taks we will include Globe training and TEA's Texas Science Diagnostic System, yet another tool to add to their growing repertoire.
