Mission

The ACC Regional Collaborative for the Excellence in Science Teaching is comprised of the Austin Community College (ACC), Hutto (HISD), Pflugerville (PISD), and Round Rock (RRISD) Independent School Districts. The Collaborative is committed to providing the highest quality training in science for K-5 teachers.

The ACC Regional Collaborative provides the Science Teacher Mentors in the Hutto, Pflugerville and Round Rock Independent School Districts with a support system of sustained professional development and mentoring. Professional development is provided in the form of training sessions, inquiry based activities, conferences, mentoring, and seminars in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and geoscience. The mentoring component provides professional relationships between the elementary school teachers and ACC science faculty to better prepare teachers with science content and strategies to enhance instruction for their students.

The focus of the ACC Regional Collaborative is to provide high quality science instruction in the classroom resulting in higher achievement for students on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).

Accomplishments

  • In January the STMs from the ACC Regional Collaborative attended the TCES Leadership Institute in Galveston. All 35 of the STMs who attended presented during the Earth and Space Science Make and Take Share-a-thon.
  • On April 15 and 16 the STMs from Pflugerville ISD hosted an Early Childhood Elementary Science PDA with Dr. Bob and
  • The STMs from our Collaborative sponsored a 5th Grade TAKS Science Camp in Hutto ISD over three Saturdays in April.  We served a total of ____ students and had ____ CMs attend the embedded professional development.  After observing classes in the morning where master teachers demonstrated lessons from the Collaboratives PDAs, the CMs attended sessions presented by the STMs in the afternoon.  Both science content and pedagogy were addressed in these sessions and training included  Bridging II TAKS, Science Notebooks, and the 5 E Model of Inquiry in Earth and Physical Science. We are anxiously awaiting the results from this year’s TAKS to see the impact we made on student achievement through the camp and  through teacher training.
  • Patty McLelland, Project Director for the ACC Regional Collaborative was awarded the Elementary Administrator of the Year Award for the state of Texas during CAST by the Texas Council of Elementary Science.
  • The ACC Regional Collaborative sent all 62 STMs to the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching in November.
  • 12 Members of our collaborative presented Science professional development at the state wide conference this year (CAST).
