Mission

To empower Region One science teachers with sustained, high-quality professional development that will enhance their teaching environment with research-based, dynamic curricular programs that focus on the TEKS and national standards. This Collaborative will foster mentoring and sharing of knowledge by encouraging networking and partnerships between teachers, our local university, and schools. The teachers will promote science excellence by acquiring and disseminating this knowledge in their home districts and attempt to reduce the achievement gap in their science performance by teaching scientific literacy to all students. This spirit of engagement must also extend beyond the borders of our Collaborative as we seek to stimulate, serve, and shape our community.

Accomplishments

2007-2008 started out with the initiation of approximately 50 enthusiastic elementary, middle, and high school science teachers into The Region One Science Collaborative. The Geology: A Change in Time three day training was completed on November 3, 2007. Teachers were prepared to turn this training around in outreach programs throughout their districts. The secondary teachers will continue to be trained with the Physics for All PDA by Dr. Debra Koeck from Texas State University. Although this training will reach its conclusion in February, many of the presented lessons can already be shared with students and cadre members. In addition, the STMs will do a physics share-a-thon with their respective districts. The share-a-thon will also include ideas from the Journaling and CAST workshops. STMs will be doing presentations at our upcoming annual RGVSA Mini CAST on February 2-3, 2008. Furthermore, Region One Texas Regional Science Collaborative members are looking forward to the use of podcasting as a medium for instruction.
